“Every great dream begins with a dreamer. Always remember, you have within you the strength, the patience, and the passion to reach for the stars to change the world.” -Harriet Tubman
Reed and his mom spent a drizzly July day touring local civil rights landmarks. They spent hours in the Seward House, learning about a local statesman who had great national political influence and even greater convictions. They visited the NYS Equal Rights Heritage Center and we were reminded of the legacy of civil rights leaders in Central New York, beginning with the indigenous people of the Iroquois Confederacy and the birthplace of the women’s rights movement in Seneca Falls. After a stop at the Prison City Brewery for a delicious lunch, Reed and his mom concluded their day at the Harriet Tubman House, where we were shown that one person can change the world. Often Reed and Willa’s can’t explain the current state of affairs to their children. But they can remind them that this nation has gone through dark times in its past and the dreamers, full of strength, patience and passion, changed the world then. And Reed and Willa’s parents can do their best to show them that they, too, are filled with strength, patience and passion. And they, too, can help change the world once again.
